Rule Changes for the Jake Paul Fight Against Mike Tyson

In a significant development ahead of the Jake Paul fight against Mike Tyson, boxing officials have announced changes to the match’s rules. Scheduled for November 15 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, this bout marks Tyson’s first return to the ring since 2020. In that match, he faced Roy Jones Jr. in a well-publicized exhibition that ended in a draw. Meanwhile, Jake Paul, 27, is eager to build on his successful boxing career, having won 10 of his 11 fights so far.

Approved Changes to Gloves and Rounds for the Jake Paul Fight

Typically, professional boxing matches in the United States require 10-ounce gloves and three-minute rounds for male fighters over 147 pounds. However, the Texas Department of Regulation and Licensing (TDLR) approved the use of 14-ounce gloves for this match. This decision came at the request of the fight’s promoter, Bryce Holden. Tela Mange, the TDLR’s Communications Manager, noted that this marks the first use of 14-ounce gloves in a sanctioned professional bout in Texas.

Mange explained that some men’s professional debuts have featured two-minute rounds, but it’s been a long time since this occurred. She added that if both fighters agree on terms that pose no safety risk and comply with regulations, they can facilitate the event under those conditions. “The introduction of heavier gloves and shorter rounds does not heighten the danger for either boxer,” she said.

Tyson’s Preference for Shorter Rounds in the Jake Paul Fight

The decision to use two-minute rounds was confirmed by Tyson earlier this year. The 58-year-old champion expressed his desire for shorter rounds, stating, “I wanted the shorter rounds to encourage more action. With just two minutes, we’ll be more engaged in fighting.” In contrast, Paul has raised concerns about Tyson’s preference for shorter rounds. In an interview with the Daily Mail, he remarked, “It’s intriguing. He advises me to maintain my shape, but I hope he’s mindful of his own.”

Paul acknowledged that Tyson’s approach could work to his advantage. However, he is ready to comply with Tyson’s conditions for the fight. “He wants this to be a professional event with eight two-minute rounds, and I’m prepared to face him on his terms,” he stated. Paul remains confident, emphasizing, “I believe Tyson might aim for an early knockout, but he’ll quickly discover that I have considerable power. Underestimating me could be a mistake, especially when I can counter effectively.”
