The iconic Red Dead Redemption, developed by Rockstar Games and beloved by millions of players worldwide, was very close to becoming an Xbox 360 exclusive. The decision to release the game on PlayStation 3 came only during the later stages of development.

As revealed by Digital Foundry in a recent video, the PlayStation 3 version of the game was a late addition to the project. Initially, all development efforts were focused on Microsoft’s console.

What many fans might not know is that Red Dead Redemption was originally designed and developed exclusively for the Xbox 360. The possibility of releasing it on PlayStation 3 was only considered after the game’s development had significantly progressed on the Microsoft platform.

Rockstar Games prioritized the Xbox 360 due to its compatibility with DirectX, a technology that made the development process smoother and enhanced the game’s performance. On the other hand, the PS3’s more complex architecture required developers to work at a more technical level, coding directly in the console’s native language for its graphics chips. This made the adaptation process for the PlayStation 3 much more time-consuming and challenging.

Former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij confirmed that the Xbox 360 was indeed the preferred platform for developing Red Dead Redemption. He explained that the initial decision was based on technical reasons, as the Xbox 360’s architecture allowed for faster development compared to the PS3. As a result, the Microsoft console was prioritized until Rockstar later decided to invest resources into bringing the game to the PlayStation 3.
